Notes for Luke 19:28-40
1. Kingdom of God vs. Kingdom of Peace
a. Two processions – Borg and Crossan, The Last Week
i. Alexander and Anthony
ii. West Side – Jesus – peasants – rags – donkey – Bethany “House of the Poor”
1. Power of Peace
2. King, but not a King
3. Zechariah 9:9-10
9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion. Sing aloud, Daughter Jerusalem. Look, your king will come to you. He is righteous and victorious. He is humble and riding on an ass, on a colt, the offspring of a donkey. 10 He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the warhorse from Jerusalem. The bow used in battle will be cut off; he will speak peace to the nations. His rule will stretch from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth.
iii. East Side – Pilate – army – splendor – war horse – “Caesarea on the Sea”
1. Imperial Power, domination
2. Came for the major Jewish festivals
b. Birth to Jerusalem
i. Augustus and Jesus
1. Son of God, savior, Lord
2. Peace not Power
3. Love not domination
ii. Multitude singing and praising – Angels in Luke 2 and Disciples in Luke 19
iii. Luke 2:14 and 19:38 - Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!
iv. Silent stones – John the Baptist – Luke 3
1. Luke 3:8b - I tell you that God is able to raise up Abraham's children from these stones.
2. Habakkuk 2:11 - A stone will cry out from a village wall, and a tree branch will respond.
c. Pharisees – last word - not mentioned again in Luke, concern perhaps instead of jerks
